Mask placement vs head voice?

ok how do i tell the difference in tone when im singing im singing one song that is in my head voice and another thats more of a belt, thats supposed to be placed in my mask. how do i tell please helpMask placement vs head voice?
I've been trying to think how to describe this in words. First, you want to feel the facial resonance while singing in your head voice (or lighter mechanism voice) as well as when you are singing in the higher ranges of the belt.

Sometimes there is confusion between the falsetto voice and the head (lighter mechanism) voice. A genuine, well-produced head voice is not breathy.

If you are not used to singing in head voice, undoubtedly, you will feel the sensation of reaching the wall at around A-flat to Middle C (if you are a man), or an octave higher (for women). That's one way to tell if you are in chest or modal voice (where you probably are). If you are mixing the modal and upper registers effectively, you will be able to finesse your way through the register shift and into the notes above Middle C (men) or the next C (women), still maintaining good quality and feeling no strain.

If you break into a breathy voice near the top of your range, you are using too much chest or modal voice.

Maybe some of that description will help you experiment and discover which voice you are using. You probably need to work with a teacher - not a coach - to help you find head voice and learn to mix or blend the registers. This is true of most singers - especially these days, when chest voice or belt voice are predominant.
