first time paintballing, and I don't know what kind of gear I really need, I don't want to buy stuff until I know I like itBesides the mask, do I need more protective gear for paint ball?
Let me second the opinion of the first person. If you're a man, you definitely want to wear a cup. Are you going to be out in a wooded area? If so, I advise you to wear some sort of head covering to protect yourself from ticks. And if you're going to be outdoors, wear some insect repellent. I think elbow and knee pads come down to personal preference. I have always felt encumbered by such gear. Here's a link to some information that may be helpful to you:

wear a cup -- you dont want to get hit in the groin!
If your aim is pretty good and your fast on your feet, jeans, head and goolie protection should be ample.
If you're not, I'd definitely go for the personnel carrier option.
